In the early morning, Heavy rain mixed with below-freezing temperatures produced a thick layer of ice on the ground. It wasn’t until 9:11 a.m. that the University of Central Oklahoma would send out a text message to cancel classes for the day due to these conditions.

UCentral has tips on how to be well-prepared throughout an ice storm.

Similar to a snowstorm, there are things that will greatly help you out: Food. It’s important to keep snacks with you in case your car is stranded in the cold.

Water. It is equally important to keep water with you in case you get stuck. Approximately 75% of Americans are dehydrated, according to a 2021 study by the National Institutes of Health.

Warm clothes and blankets are essential to walking around in cold areas.

Ice scrapers and jumper cables are important to use when driving in freezing environments.

Avoid driving unless necessary. When home, keep your faucets dripping.
