Welcome to the Fam Week at UCO

On Aug. 25, the University of Central Oklahoma’s Diversity Round Table (DRT) started its Welcome to the Fam Week for students to celebrate culture and community by having the DRT organizations host events throughout the week.

Monday started with “Welcome to the Fam Week Kickoff,” which gave students a way to meet all the organizations in DRT.

The organizations under DRT are:

  • American Association of University Women (AAUW)
  • Asian American Association  (AASAA)
  • Black Student Association (BSA)
  • Hispanic American Student Association (HASA)
  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
  • Native American Student Association (NASA)
  • Student Alliance for Equality (SAFE)

Tuesday was “AAUW Karaoke Night,” where students came out and sang their favorite songs.

On Wednesday, the AASA hosted a “Cultural Game Night”. They had traditional games, boba from Happy Lemon, and tabling from UCO’s cultural organizations. The organizations included:

  • UCO Martial Arts club
  • The Vietnamese Student Association
  • The Iranian Student Association
  • The Hindi Student Association
  • The Nepali Student Association
  • Tau Kappa Omega Beta Chapter

Next, Thursday started with SAFE’s Ice Cream Social. This was followed by the NAACP 101 paint and sip.

The NAACP had students paint, and they served sparkling juice. There was also a presentation for students to learn about what the NAACP is. A’torica Smith, the director of operations for NAACP, said, “It got to a point where I thought I was going to have to tell people that they could not come in because it was getting so packed and we had to go get more chairs from around the campus”.

Later in the day, HASA hosted “Mi Hasa Su Casa” with a traditional game night and snow cones.

Lastly, on Friday, DRT had “First Year Brunch.” They served IHOP breakfast to first-year freshmen and also new transfer students at UCO.

The last event for Welcome to the Fam Week was hosted by NASA, which held its “Stomp Dance.” Students who attended could learn about Native American culture and support the 15 local vendors that came out.

Information on finding more DRT events can be found on the Ucore website.
