Pie Throwing Helps UCO NAACP Reach Fundraising Goal

The University of Central Oklahoma’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter hosted a fundraiser Sept. 10, where participants threw pies at executive board members, with proceeds going toward sustaining the organization’s national involvement.

UCO NAACP Executive members, Brooklyn Porter, Phoebe Hilliard, A’torica Smith, Ro Delgado-Hill, Ariana Osborne and Cheyenne McClellan.

Students were able to purchase one pie for $3 or two pies for $5.

“It was a good bonding experience for my board on top of the fact that we’re raising money for our compliance with nationals, so it was an all-around good of it.” said Phoebe Hillard, the president of UCO NAACP.

This event was designed not only to entertain but also to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the chapter connected to the NAACP at a national level.

“The event was very nice. I like how all of the people came and showed support. My favorite part was getting pied.” said Ro Delgado-Hill, the Director of Special Events for UCO NAACP. He said that he lost track of how many pies he got.

UCO’s NAACP wants to be able to get more resources out to their community and by being active at the national level they are able to get those resources out by several key centers from their C-Hope strategies:

  • Center for Health Equity – Collaborating with communities to address social determinants of health, including racism, poverty, exclusion, unsafe housing, poor nutrition, and environmental hazards.
  • Center for Opportunity, Race, and Justice – Ensuring the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all people while eliminating race-based discrimination.
  • Center for Education Innovation – Fighting systemic barriers that limit access to quality education and scholarly resources, ensuring every child and young adult can reach their full potential.
  • Center for Environmental and Climate Justice – Advocating for a sustainable planet and protecting communities from environmental harm.

The fundraiser did work out since the organization did reach their goal.
