Around 9 a.m. Sunday morning, police received reports of a dead body on campus. Police, the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations (OSBI) and the State Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting the investigation.

An email was sent out to university residents Sunday afternoon, alerting them to the situation, and informing them that there was no immediate threat to campus.

UCO President Todd Lamb released a statement via email Monday which said, “The University of Central Oklahoma family has experienced a tragic loss. I am saddened to share that Sunday morning we lost a student to an apparent suicide.”

Lamb then said he and UCO first-lady Monica Lamb waited until they could speak face-to-face with the parents of the student before making a formal announcement.

In the email, he thanked UCO police, Housing and Residential Life staff and the Center for Counseling and Well-Being.

“Our Broncho family unites both in times of celebration and in times of tragedy,” said Lamb. “I appreciate the care and compassion that have and continue to be at the forefront of the response to this loss.”

Data shows that roughly 40% of college students experience some level of depression and 36% experience some form of anxiety disorder, according to a 2022-2023 Healthy Minds Study.

“Know that as a member of the Broncho family, you are surrounded by a community that cares about you,” said Lamb. “Do not hesitate to reach out for help and remember to extend kindness and concern to each other.”
