Women’s Soccer Win First Match of The Season

The University of Central Oklahoma women’s soccer team took their first win of the season at Southern Nazarene University, beating them 2-1 Wednesday evening.

“We stayed composed under pressure and benefited from our teams’ hard work and winning mentality,” said UCO soccer women’s head coach Amel Muhamedagic.

The Bronchos gained the first goal at the 42nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Cotton sealed the goal from a penalty kick, allowing the Bronchos a 1-0 lead going into the half. Early in the second half, at the 51st minute, Sophomore midfielder Jordan Tanges scored the second goal to make it 2-0. SNU scored a late goal at the 78th minute leaving the final score 2-1 as the Bronchos won.

“Not many tactical changes, but we did look for our depth to come in and provide us some much needed minutes and perform at the same consistent level,” Muhamedagic said when going into the second half of the game.

Central Oklahoma and Southern Nazarene have had previous match rivalries, with the Bronchos undefeated 8-0 in their match-up history.

“The goal for every game is to outwork the other team in all phases of the game. Put teams under pressure, maintain the possession of the ball and create chances to finish,” Muhamedagic explained.

A key factor that continues for the Bronchos to strive to lead in this local rivalry.

The women’s soccer team will be hosting the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs this Sunday at 1pm on Tom Thompson Field. This game will be their last match before they head into the Mid-America Athletics Association (MIAA) conference where they will face Washburn and Emporia State next weekend at home.
