UCO’s Students for Life of America Hosts Guest Speaker Kirstan Hawkins

The Students for Life of America (A Pro-Life Organization) hosted the “Abortion is Oppression” event on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Nigh.
Many people attended the event, including students from UCO and other universities like Oklahoma Christian, along with members of the community.
The event was hosted by the organization’s President, Kristan Hawkins. She is the CEO of the Pro-Life Generation, a Pro-Life organization that oversees:
- Students for Life of America
- Students for Life: Action
- Campaign for Abortion Free Cities
- Standing with You
- The Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement.
She also hosts her own podcast, “The Kristan Hawkins Show.”
Although the event was recorded by Hawkins and her team, they did not allow people to film in the hall.
Hawkins started off the event by talking about the day that Charlie Kirk was killed. She talked about how she was at an event at the University of Montana in Missoula. Saying how she was under basically the same type of tent Kirk was under.
The Pro-Life speaker then went on to her “Abortion is Oppression” talk. Hawkins explains how an abortion is oppressive, and it all starts with dehumanization. She claimed she viewed it as a form of dehumanization to call a baby in the womb a “clump of cells”.
“Oppression and Violence come from dehumanization,” said Hawkins
Hawkins says that abortions are not the only option. One of her biggest points is that the culture needs to be changed. When the life of the mother is at risk, Hawkins’ idea is for the mother to carry the baby for as long as possible in the womb, then perform a C-Section. Acknowledging the fact that although the baby may not be at full term, it is still a better option than abortion.
Hawkins said a mom and baby are equal, whereas when getting an abortion, they are not.
After Hawkins had given her speech, she opened the floor for audience members to ask questions and debate.
A total of 11 people went up to the mic.
Students asked for advice on how to talk about the subject of abortion to others who do not share the same views as them.
One attendee started to yell at Hawkins after they were asked to sit down, and the microphone was taken from them.
The next day, Hawkins set up a booth in the Nigh to continue the debates. Hawkins was there with her team, where she was filming the booth and students asking questions.
Kristan Hawkins declined to answer questions from The Vista.
