UCO Women’s Soccer Home Kickoff
The University of Central Oklahoma’s Women’s Soccer team played their first home game of the season Thursday evening at Tom Thompson Field against Midwestern, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Midwestern took the first goal of the game early. Not long after though, UCO’s Midfielder Rebekah George responded. The match was tied 1-1 at the half with MSU taking the 2-1 lead shortly after. Sophomore Forward Caleah Carter scored the final goal leaving the home opener as a tie.
Central Oklahoma scrimmaged No. 3 Minnesota State September 6th in Mankato to kickoff their preseason. The final score was 0-0. Keeping a clean sheet, Senior Avery Bass made five saves and a penalty. The Bronchos also played on September 7th but fell to Augustana. The final score being 3-1.
“Obviously we wanted to come out of the weekend with two wins, but we showed lots of potential and have a bright future ahead. I think we showed that we can not only hang, but compete with top ranked teams,” said Goalkeeper Avery Bass.
Bass went on to say, “Giving up penalty kick goals was unfortunate, but it’s not something we can’t work on and fix. I think we’re starting to establish an identity and show some consistency in our playing style which is exciting so early in the season.”
In August they were ranked No. 2 in the Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll. They are also currently standing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) as No. 7.
In the 2024 season they held a record of 12-7-4. The team made it to the finals in the MIAA Postseason tournament falling short against Central Missouri losing 1-0. They also advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Central Region Championship. Finishing their season in the semifinals losing to Central Missouri 2-0.
The next game will be away at 7 p.m. on Sunday September 13, in Dallas Texas against No. 7 Dallas Baptist University.
