Studio Ghibli Immersive Movie Night

The Asian American Student Association and the Dining Activities Council at the University of Central Oklahoma will host its first-ever immersive Studio Ghibli Night on Oct. 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Nigh University Center in Constitution Hall.

This event is the first collaboration between DAC and AASA. “This is the first time we’re hosting this event, but we hope to make it an annual tradition,” said DAC President Kylee Hillard.

She continues, “The movies are familiar and comforting while also bringing people together from all walks of life.”

AASA President Kalvin Gutierrez said, “AASA has a big following, so we’re excited to see how many students come out, even younger viewers can follow along, but adults notice the subtle and meaningful details.”

Studio Ghibli is a well-known Japanese animation studio best known for its hand-drawn art style and simple but rich storytelling, which blends family-friendly content with deeper themes such as war, environmentalism, and personal growth.

DAC Vice President Arianna Osburne said, “The movies are calm and family-friendly, but they also have strong messages that stay with you.”

DAC’s graphic designer Tiffany Lamb shared, “Some of the films make you emotional, but in a comforting way. They’re iconic and really resonate with people.”

The event will have special themed food from the movie “My Neighbor Totoro”, such as special flavored popcorn and Bento boxes with chicken or beef.

“We wanted to make the experience as immersive as possible, so attendees can enjoy flavors from the films while watching,” said DAC President Kylee Hillard.

Following the movie night, both DAC and AASA will continue hosting events. DAC is hosting Tailgate for Homecoming, and AASA will host a karaoke night on Nov.12.
