Ryan Walters Implements “America First Teacher Test”
Oklahoma State Superindent Ryan Walters has collaborated with PragerU to now require incoming teachers from New York and California to pass the America First test.
The test consists of 34 multiple choice questions and will be administered online through PragerU, an Oklahoma-based conservative nonprofit organization.
“We have been focusing on getting education back to the basics; getting it away from all the woke indoctrination, all the nonsense… We have to make sure that the teachers in our classroom, as we’re recruiting these individuals, aren’t a bunch of woke, Marxist activists,” said Walters in the test’s introduction video on PragerU.
The test has questions on topics ranging from human biology and sexuality, United States history and govermental struture, symbols of American patriotism, and the foundational ideas in the United States Constitution.
A few examples of questions and answers that PragerU and Walters have on their America First Teacher Test are:
- “What is the fundamental biological distinction between males and females?” with the correct choice being, “chromosomes and reproductive anatomy.”
- “What did the Supreme Court rule in the 2025 case Mahmoud v. Taylor?” with the correct choice being, “public schools cannot require participation in LGBTQ-themed instruction without parental opt-out.”
- “What are the first three words of the Constitution?” with the correct choice being, “We the People.”
- “What is the name of the national anthem?” with the correct choice being, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
- “Why is freedom of religion important to America’s identity?” with the correct answer being, “it protects religious choice from government control.”
Those who complete the exam will receive a digital certificate of completion, verifying that they have successfully completed the test. Teachers can reattempt the test an unlimited amount of times until a passing score is achieved.
Democratic Senator, Mary Boren, who served in Oklahoma public education before starting her career in Oklahoma politics pointed out that, “It keeps giving you chances to get the right answer. So there’s no way to fail the test anyway. So it doesn’t necessarily even screen the true motives of anybody. If you can’t fail the test, you could be a woke teacher that could take the test, pass it, and get certified and still go on about your woke life, doing woke things.”
With the implementation of this test in Oklahoma, concerns regarding the effect it may have on the continued shortage in teaching staff across the state are also being considered.
Boren continued to say, “It’ll keep any serious teacher from very seriously considering coming to Oklahoma. We’ve got 30,000 certified teachers that aren’t even in the classroom right now. They’re in Oklahoma and they’ve shifted careers or they’re not in the classroom right now.”
