In Case You Missed It: The Last Two UCOSA Meetings in Summary

UCOSA Nov. 10 Meeting

The University of Central Oklahoma Student Association met on Monday, November 10, to conduct Robert’s Rules of Order training and approve funding for several student organizations.

Izzi Barry, former UCOSA chair, led a session on parliamentary procedure using Robert’s Rules of Order, emphasizing the purpose and structure of student government legislation.

Funding passed during the 11th meeting included CFR 25-107: $1,600 for six student ambassadors and two advisors to attend a national collegiate and visitor service awards conference; CFR 25-108: $2,400 for the Student School Psychology Association to present research in Chicago; and CFR 25-109: $300 for the Philosophy Club to attend the Oklahoma-Arkansas Philosophy Conference. CFR 25-110: A $5,600 funding request from the Central Veterans organization was not approved.

Other bills passed included CR25-102, regarding the removal of a senator for lack of attendance at Congressional meetings.

In new business: bill CR25-103 was presented, which proposed banning guns on campus except for police personnel.

Natalya Simmons from Campus Development shared plans to create a “Hammock Cove,” a welcoming lounge area with solar-powered seating between the Communications and Business buildings, serving as both a relaxing spot and a meeting area for clubs.

Sophie Greenley from the Ways and Means committee reported that only two meetings remain this semester and that the committee has allocated $14,870 so far, with additional funding expected for more bills.

Soha Jawaid from the Academic Affairs committee discussed progress on the “Dead Week” bill and ongoing collaboration with faculty and staff senate members, including Dr. Milligan, the senate president from the Regional University System of Oklahoma and surrounding congressional schools.

Announcements reminded students of legislation deadlines, with there only being two more meetings, the parliamentarian position being taken over, and upcoming campus events, including Broncho Assembly meetings and coat donations for the Hope Center in the Student Involvement Center.

The meeting adjourned after the general announcements.

UCOSA Nov. 3 Meeting

The meeting opened with introductions and announcements from Christopher Lynch, vice president of enrollment and student success, who will serve as the interim replacement for Cole Stanley as the advisor for the University of Central Oklahoma Student Association.

Lynch, who has been at UCO for five years, joined the administration during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interim appointment will last while a formal search is conducted for a new advisor.

Other business discussed included the new business item, CR25-102, establishing standard procedures for removing senators for conduct or attendance issues.

Student concerns were also raised, including safety and maintenance issues with the Murdaugh Hall dorm stairs, predominantly on the southeast staircase; wasp nests in addition to broken glass outside of the Quadrangle dorms; and classroom temperatures.

Campus announcements featured scholarship workshops hosted by the Black Male Initiative in the Henry Bellmon Room in the Nigh University Center (314) every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the now past International Festival, and information on the Central Pantry on the first floor of the Nigh University Center. Students were encouraged to attend Broncho Assembly meetings and campus sporting events, including the final home football game.

The meeting adjourned following routine announcements.
