Freshman Pitcher Delivers in Spotlight as Central Oklahoma Splits Weekend Doubleheader

In a season where Madison Hamilton has seen limited action in the pitching circle for Central Oklahoma, the freshman rose to the occasion when the No. 14-ranked Bronchos needed her most Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Hamilton, who had logged just 8.2 innings across six appearances entering the day, delivered a clutch complete-game performance in a 3-2 nightcap win that secured a doubleheader split with Drury.

Drury took the first game on Friday afternoon despite limited offense, scoring four runs in the third and one in the fourth on four hits against three UCO pitchers.

The victory snapped UCO’s (19-5) eight-game winning streak, as the Panthers captured the opener 5-2 before the Bronchos bounced back.

Hamilton’s effort in the second game was emphatic: a 98-pitch outing with four hits allowed, no walks, and eight strikeouts, earning her first collegiate win and improving her ledger to 1-1. The freshman pitcher retired three straight batters to close out the first game’s no-hit stretch and immediately returned to the circle for the nightcap.

Drury had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, only for Central Oklahoma to answer with two runs in the bottom half, sparked by Rylee Lemos’ leadoff single and Brooklyn Ryan’s subsequent base hit. The Bronchos pushed across two on a Kennedy Clark two-run single up the middle.

Key moments came in the sixth inning of the nightcap.

Brooklyn Lyles’ sacrifice fly provided the tiebreaking run after Clark walked and pinch-runner McKenzie Niehus moved to third on Haley Gallo’s double to right. Lyles followed with a productive fly out to center, scoring Niehus and giving UCO a 3-2 edge.

In the Panthers’ final at-bat, a leadoff double put pressure on Hamilton, but the freshman responded with a game-ending groundout after a critical full-count strikeout to keep the lead intact.

Looking ahead, the Bronchos will hope to ride the momentum from Saturday’s standout pitching performance as they continue their pursuit of a strong finish to the season.

For Hamilton, the breakout effort could mark the start of a larger role as conference play intensifies.

Central will host Texas A&M International in another doubleheader this Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
