Feature: Sydney Hucks Life in Volleyball

Sydney Huck is a senior outside hitter for the University of Central Oklahoma Women’s Volleyball team and is a veteran for one of the top-ranked teams in the country.

“It has been pretty amazing to be able to be a part of this team; it’s definitely been tough, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but having such a great group of girls to look to has made the journey so much easier,” said Sydney.

For Sydney, Volleyball is more than a game. Volleyball has been her life for many years.

“I have been playing volleyball longer than I haven’t,” said Sydney.

Sydney said her parents put her in volleyball at 10 years old to tire her out. She said that she ended up falling in love with the game and always knew she wanted to play in college.

After 4 seasons of playing volleyball at UCO, she has been given awards, and her stats back them up. In her freshman season, she was named MIAA Freshman of the Year while hitting for .368 and 18 kills (Kills are a successful offensive attack resulting in a point for the attacking team) in her collegiate debut.

She averaged 14.2 kills per match while going over the 20-kill mark 11 times. In her sophomore season, she averaged 11 kills a match and was ranked 9 in the league for this stat while also having double-digit kills in 18 matches.

In that season, she picked up a First-Team All-MIAA pick. Last season, in her junior year, she received another First-Team selection and was named Offensive Player of the Week two times during the season. She had double-digit kills again, but in 21 matches this time.

She had a total of 352 kills for the season, and pairing that with 57 blocks shows that she has grown into an all-around player. She is now close to moving into the UCO all-time top 10 for kills, having had 60 matches with 10 or more kills.

When she was in high school, she was a starter all 4 years at McKinney North High School in McKinney, Texas. She acquired over 1,000 career kills, was a three-time All-District Selection, and a four-time Academic All-District Honoree.

Sydney is a Strategic Communications major at UCO. After college, she hopes to start her professional career. She wants to go into sports media and work in athletics at the collegiate level.
