Buddy Has His Birthday Bash

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Student Programming Board (SPB), in partnership with UCO Housing, hosted Buddy’s Birthday on Sept. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Nigh University Center’s Cherokee Room 213.

The annual tradition featured cupcakes, snacks, photo opportunities, and interactive activities honoring Buddy, the university’s beloved Broncho mascot. Students took part in games such as “Pin the Tail on the Horse” and birthday hat decorating before the highlight of the evening, a spirited line dance-off.

“The activity I was most looking forward to was the line dance-off,” said Bella Rodriguez, vice executive director of SPB.

“UCO is really big on line dances, so it was exciting to see everyone participate with the playlist we put together.”

Buddy made a special appearance, greeting students and posing for photos. Adding to the excitement, Buck UCO’s new mascot surprised the crowd by arriving with a birthday gift for Buddy, drawing cheers and laughter from attendees.

For many, the mascots symbolized the pride and tradition of UCO. “Buddy kind of envisioned what UCO is,” Rodriguez said. “He made students proud, kept the spirit alive at football games, and embodied what it means to be a Broncho.”

The celebration also provided students with an opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules and connect with their peers. “It brought students together,” Rodriguez said. “They got to share cupcakes, laugh, and feel part of the community.”

By the close of the event, attendees left with photos, memories, and a renewed sense of Broncho spirit, reflecting the very purpose of Buddy’s birthday tradition.
