Will Maiga, also known as MAIGUY, a student at The Academy of Contemporary Music at UCO, performed his last show on Nov. 13 at ACM’s Live Room.

The show was opened by bands Whens Lunch and Magenta Burn.

When’s Lunch is an alternative rockabilly band and Magenta Burn is an alternative rock band, both based out of OKC. The bands played a variety of original songs along with covers as well.

MAIGUY & The Major Fifths took the stage to perform what MAIGUY referred to as “head nodding music.” This is MAIGUY’s last performance because he is moving to Vancouver, Canada, in December.

“If you wanna do music for real and learn what the pros do, this is the place. From playing in a band, working in a studio, managing an artist, this is the place in OKC to do so.” Maiguy said in regards to his experience at ACM.

MAIGUY is an Alternative R&B artist with a hint of funk and jazz fusion. He performed several original songs, including “Pink Whitney”, “Tell Me, Girl”, and “Even Still”. The setlist allowed all members on the stage to shine with solos from the saxophone, guitar, and keys.

“I chose the originals because I’m proud of what I’ve made, and the band has done an amazing job in writing their parts and putting together a coherent sound,” he said.

His performance included a couple of covers, including an even jazzier rendition of the Mii Channel Theme song, as he considers it a certified Gen Z classic. This rendered true as the audience grooved along while admiring the meme slideshow that progressed in the background of the set.

The other cover was “Ryd” by Steve Lacy, as Lacy serves as an inspiration for MAIGUY.

He stated, “I want to be an artist and producer, kind of like how Dr. Dre, Pharrell, Steve Lacy, and Kaytranada do. Produce for others and make music myself as an artist.”

The final song of the night was an original called “Dancing in the Dark”. It was apparent that the crowd had so much support for MAIGUY’s final show, and he will be missed from the ACM community.
