Friday’s game started in favor of OU, who struck first early into the first period, and added three more goals in the second period, putting them in a 4-0 lead before the third.

The Bronchos outshot 53-28 in the first two periods, finally finding their momentum in the third period when Sam Sykes scored UCO’s first goal of the game off an assist from Davis Thompson.

“As soon as we scored that first goal, we knew we were able to come back,” said UCO defenseman Andrew Cervantes.

UCO scored two more goals.

Robby Rabroker scored a shorthanded goal with assists from Cullen Hogan and Mitchell Wilson.

UCO’s goalie Hunter Farrer stopped 49 of 53 shots on the goal, keeping the team within reach of overtime. Josh Bishop finally closed the gap to one with a score assisted by Connor Homan, ending the game with a final score of 4-3.

Saturday’s home game was just as competitive, highlighted by physical play and penalty-filled moments.

The Bronchos opened first with a goal by Thompson in the first period, assisted by Jeffrey Rebmann and Frank Mondi, but OU answered quickly with a score of their own.

After neither team scored in the second period, UCO regained momentum in the third with Mohommad Ananda scoring twice, briefly giving the team a lead.

OU quickly tied the game with a late third-period power play goal, sending the matchup into overtime.

UCO hockey head coach J.B. Dubecky said that the turning point in Saturday’s game was OU capitalizing on the power play. “We took a couple of bad penalties late in the game that really swung the momentum in their favor.”

Despite the setbacks in penalties and power plays, Dubecky was happy with the team’s performance.

“I thought we controlled the game and were playing very well,” Dubecky said. “A couple of bad bounces and bad penalties got the momentum going their way, and we couldn’t overcome the push in overtime. All in all proud of the team for making it as close as it was.”
