Japanese Student Association Kicks Off Semester with Game Night

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Japanese Student Association (JSA) will host Japanese Game Night on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Nigh University Center Ballroom A to kick off the new semester.

“In the past, our kickoff was mainly a presentation for Japanese exchange students,” said Kyoka Shibayama, JSA President. “But since fewer exchange students are coming, we wanted to create something more open and fun for everyone.”

The event will include a short introduction, a quiz on Japanese culture, and traditional activities like kendama, origami, ayatori (string figures), daruma otoshi, and fukuwarai. Students can also enjoy Japanese snacks and prizes, including Hi-Chew candies, Umaibo, stickers, and limited origami crane earrings.

Shibayama said the goal is not only to share culture but also to build connections. “Games are a great way to talk, laugh, and feel welcome even if it’s your first time meeting,” she said.

JSA has more events planned this semester, including a Japanese Cooking Class and participation in the International Festival. Shibayama encourages all students to get involved: “We don’t want JSA to disappear. We need your support to keep sharing Japanese culture and building community.”

The event is open to all UCO students, whether you are a JSA member or simply curious about Japanese culture.
